History

Ferol Beckner was a multi-passionate businessman. When he came back home from the army, he went to work for his dad for a little while and then decided to build a drive-in malt shop called Frosty Bar in 1961, which he owned and operated until 1968 when he sold it. He then moved to Lubbock, Texas, got licensed as an insurance agent, and sold life insurance. Not long after, he was promoted and moved to Commerce, Texas. But things weren’t good, and after eating bean sandwiches for four months, he moved his family back to Lubbock and continued to sell life insurance until the May 11th, 1970 when an F5 tornado hit downtown Lubbock. His wife Mickey said enough, and back to Clayton, NM they went.

He went to work for Lynn Crosswait, the original owner of General Insurance Agency, which was started in Roy, New Mexico with the Clayton office being a branch office. The Clayton office soon became the main office with Roy changing to the branch office. In 1984, Ferol bought GIA and closed the Roy office. Mickey Beckner quit her job at the Jr. High and went to work as Ferol’s bookkeeper. In 1986, they hired Kyle Beckner, and General Insurance Agency became a family-owned and ran business.

But how on earth did GIA become Union County Insurance? Well, it’s a long story. To keep it short…Ferol sold GIA in 1992 to Leroy Wood, who owned Union County Insurance. In the meantime, Kyle moved to Clovis in 1993 and went to work as a fireman and wrote some policies on the side. Business began to pick up here in Clovis, and he and his wife, Robin, opened GIA in Clovis, New Mexico November 7th, 1995. Then in 1997, Ferol bought the agency back from Leroy Wood and that’s how both agencies were formed. Kyle and brother Coby bought the agency in 2015.

We are still family owned, and we here for you for the long haul!
